The DeSoto Parish School Board met in special session at the DeSoto Parish School Board Instructional Materials Center, 523 Oxford Road, Mansfield, Louisiana, on Thursday, April 23, 2020, at 1:30 p.m. with the following members attending virtually:

            Dudley M. Glenn, Dr. Neil Henderson, Jeffrey Dillard, Donald B. Dufour, Alice Thomas, and Bobby Boyd.  Superintendent Clay Corley was present at the physical location.

            Absent:  Coday Johnston, Dale Morvan, Mark Ross, and Thomas Craig, Jr.

            Item 1:  Call to order

            Superintendent Corley called the special session to order and President Boyd led the invocation.

            Item 2: Consider resolution making appointment of board member to fill the vacancy in District 11 until a special election is held and calling a special election to fill the vacancy.

            Superintendent Corley read a letter from Mrs. Mayweather to the Board Members, expressing her appreciation for the Board’s consideration.  He then read the resolution in its entirety. 

            Mr. Dufour made the motion, seconded by Ms. Thomas, to adopt the resolution naming Mrs. Rosie Mayweather as District 11 School Board Member until a special election is held and calling a special election to fill the vacancy.  The motion carried with the following votes – Yes = 6, No = 0, Absent = 4, and Abstentions = 0. 

RESOLUTION OF THE DESOTO PARISH SCHOOL BOARD

WHEREAS, L.J. Mayweather, Board Member, District 11, DeSoto Parish School Board, Parish of DeSoto, State of Louisiana, passed away on April 7, 2020, resulting in a vacancy in that office.

WHEREAS, pursuant to La. R.S. 18:602(B), the governing authority has until April 27, 2020, to make an appointment to fill this position until an election can be held; and

WHEREAS, the DeSoto Parish School Board is given the authority and responsibility under the provisions of La. R.S. 18:602 to appoint a person to fill the vacancy who meets the qualifications of the office, and to call a special election to fill the vacancy.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT, We, the members of the DeSoto Parish School Board, at a special meeting duly convened on April 23, 2020,  resolved that Rosie Mayweather be appointed to fill the position of Board Member, District 11 until a special election can be held to fill the vacancy.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT, a special election be called and held with the primary election date set for November 3, 2020, and the general election date set for December 5, 2020, with qualifying dates set for July 15, 16, and 17, 2020. 

By Motion of Board Member Donald B. Dufour, duly seconded by Board Member Alice Thomas, the above Resolution was adopted by the following vote on this 23^rd day of April, 2020.

            Superintendent Corley, President Boyd and Board Members all expressed their pleasure with the unanimous decision of appointing Mrs. Rosie Mayweather as Board Member representing District 11 until a special election is held later this year.

            Item 4:  Adjournment

On a motion by Mr. Glenn, seconded by Mr. Dufour, the Board voted to adjourn at

1:40 p.m.
