GARNISHMENT AND WAGE ASSIGNMENTS

 

 

A wage assignment is a legal summons for the employer to withhold a specific amount of money from an employee’s salary to satisfy a debt.  Wage assignments cannot be canceled by the DeSoto Parish School Board and are categorized as:

 

  1. Garnishments – A legal summons to satisfy a debt from a creditor.

  2. Child Support Payment – A specific amount of money to pay support for minor children.

  3. Federal Tax Levy – A levy for the payment of taxes owed to the Department of the Treasury – Internal Revenue Service.

  4. State Tax Levy – A levy for the payment of taxes owed to the Louisiana Department of Revenue and Taxation or other state.

  5. Student Loan Debt – Money owed on a Federal Student Loan.

  6. Chapter 13 Bankruptcy – An amount of money approved by the courts is withheld from the employee’s check.

 

It shall be the policy of the DeSoto Parish School Board that with any judgment for garnishment of wages or salaries or other wage assignment which includes a processing fee to be deducted by the employer, the payroll department shall deduct the processing fee from the non-exempt income of the employee for each pay period during which the judgment or garnishment is in effect.  The processing fee shall be for the cost of the School Board in complying with the judgment of garnishment.

 

All funds realized from the processing fee shall be credited to the general fund of the School Board.
